JOURNEYMAN 2019

Character produced by myself and other artists

[REFLECTION]
Reflection of my work is found detailed underneath each image.
> despite joining the course halfway into my second year at university, I was able to learn the game-character pipeline in a reasonable time
> the Journeyman module helped inform my career route decision by producing a character and by working as part of a team
> whilst I find joy in all of the stages of the pipeline, I'm most passionate about Sculpting and Texturing
> the issues with the character were due to me underestimating the time each pipeline stage would take
[MY ROLE : 'Digital Sculptor']
The team roles were decided through weekly art tests to assess the skill of each team member.
Three Digital Sculptors were assigned the bulk of the work and the complex tasks, specifically to produce the first three characters of the line-up. The rest of the team produced the accessories and head models of the characters.
The Digital Sculptors followed the game-character pipeline and took other members' work through art passes ensuring that each character has a consistent art style.

[ANIMATION TEAM SKINNED, RIGGED AND ANIMATED OUR MODELS]
[GIVEN THEME FOR 2019] = Fortnite
The Character Team successfully produced a range of character models to be used in games created by the other Journeyman teams.
Besides the end product, we collaborated as a team to :
> problem solve how to balance the character requests between designs that challenged our skills, designs we'd enjoy making and designs that were realistic to achieve within the constraints of the deadline
> pick out the key elements of Fortnite's art style (giving each team member guidelines to work towards)
We planned to produce 10 characters, 12 as a stretch goal. In the end, we proudly produced 17.
[CONCEPT + ADDING A PERSONAL TOUCH]
Heavily based on the Concept Artist's design. Tweaks were made with permission.
Final Goal : make a game-ready character that fits the art style of Fortnite.
My decisions :
> focus the art style towards one of Fortnite's core art style features present in their world-items, but not in their characters (angular and noticeable 3D planes). I think it was a missed opportunity (especially since the feature is partially present, but only on the character base bodies).
> add relevant parts of my art style for practice
